Description
Connal Lee’s hillbilly Maw gave him birth the first week of February, 1845, named him, then died. His drunken Paw abused the boy and his older brother and sister. By the time Connal Lee turned twelve, his father had turned real mean. The kids escaped and walked to Independence, Missouri where they met a man heading up a handcart company. They had heard of the California gold rush and decided to go west to seek their fortunes.
They left the end of July, 1857, pushing a handcart across the Overland Trail. They were used to fresh meat in the Ozarks, so they hunted in the evenings to augment their meager fare.
The Overland Trail teemed with adventures. Dangerous weather. A huge herd of buffalo stopped them. Warriors of the Pawnee Nation demanded a toll to cross their lands. The handcart company spent a sad week at Scotts Bluff sick with cholera. Several died. In Fort Laramie, Connal Lee befriended Captain Reed of the Cavalry who came to call him Little Brother.
A school teacher from London had started classes every evening on the trail. She taught Connal Lee how to read, write, and speak proper English, leaving his hillbilly accent behind. Connal Lee grew to love his teacher and her husband. He asked them to be his foster parents. To his joy, they agreed.
After a hard uphill climb, they crossed the Continental Divide. Connal Lee couldn’t find game in the barren desert, so he offered to ride out hunting away from the trail during the day. Shortly after the Divide, a pack of Crow warriors attacked the handcart company. Connal Lee was out hunting when they shot him in the leg. He pulled the arrow free then passed out. The next day a young Shoshone family, an apprentice War Chief, apprentice medicine man, and an apprentice shaman girl found him. They treated his wounds and fed him. He couldn’t travel by himself, so he accompanied them. They became friends as they traveled. Connal Lee taught them English while he learned to speak Shoshone.
They rode west on the Overland Trail, returning to Chief Arimo’s camp on the Portneuf River a little south of Fort Hall. On the way, Connal Lee learned to shoot the Shoshone war bow. He taught his Shoshone friends how to shoot his double barrel shotgun.
The handcart train recovered from the Crow attack and continued their trek to Zion. Captain Reed arrived with a company of cavalry to guard the train until they reached Fort Hall. Zeff and Sister Woman didn’t want to continue without Connal Lee, but they had to for their own safety and that of their baby son.
And thus, Connal Lee’s adventure began.
