Connal Lee’s Big Brother, Captain John Reed, received a promotion to Major. The army reassigned him to Army Intelligence at their headquarters in West Point. Major Reed visited the Shoshone family on his way to turn over command of Fort Hall to General Johnston. Connal Lee rode to Fort Floyd with Major Reed. While there he purchased surplus uniform fabric to use in furnishing his new home. Machine milled fabric was rare and valuable in the territory. Connal Lee unintentionally became a wealthy man by this windfall.
Because John was going to New York State, a free state, he gave his slave, Ned, his freedom.
Gold was discovered close by at Pike’s Peak. Once the newspapers spread word of the discovery, prospectors and settlers swarmed to the area from both coasts, creating even more friction with the Indians.
Connal Lee and his family had missed the Shoshone Tribal Sun Dance for the third summer. To make up for it, they hosted a small family version, followed by supper and a barn dance. They invited all their friends from Great Salt Lake City. Screaming Eagle taught the boys the traditional Sun Dance steps. During the Sun Dance cel-ebration, Connal Lee received word that General Johnston dispatched a company of men to arrest Chief Pocatello for raiding wagon trains and settlements around the Bear River.
