Description

Book Three: Wars and Rumors continued Connal Lee Swinton’s adventures with his Shoshone family in the winter of 1857. It picked up where Book Two: Indian Affairs ended. Captain John Reed of the Cavalry took command of Fort Hall. He received word that President Buchanan dispatched a huge army to suppress a nonexistent rebellion of the Mormons. Chief Arimo sent Connal Lee and his family to Great Salt Lake City to deliver the intelligence of the invasion to Governor Young.
Connal Lee’s family invited Short Rainbow’s younger sister, Bright Star, to join their tipi as a new wife. A Bannock warrior rode into camp and told Chief Arimo of an imminent attack on Mormon Missionaries up in Fort Lemhi. Connal Lee thought Captain Reed should know, so he rode into Fort Hall to tell him. The Captain invited Connal Lee to make a rush trip to Fort Lemhi to see for themselves. They arrived after the attack.
Governor Young sent Major Harris of the Nauvoo Legion to invite Chief Arimo to welcome the new Governor at a formal reception. The Chief sent Connal Lee’s family as his representatives. On the ride to Great Salt Lake City they saw the evacuated settlements. The Mormons had all moved south of Provo to be out of harms way should the army invade. A young Mormon guard at Box Elder Fort mistook Screaming Eagle as a ransacking savage and shot him in the arm.
They met Governor Cumming at a formal reception in William Staines’ mansion. They attended the conference in the Tabernacle when Brigham Young introduced the new Governor to the public. Their diplomatic duties completed, they returned to Chief Arimo’s winter camp.
Early spring, Captain Reed received intelligence of Peace Commissioners with pardons dispatched to the Territory of Utah. The Chief sent Connal Lee to the new Governor and President Young to make sure they knew. During the visit, Connal Lee saved the Governor and President Young’s lives by foiling an attack on the Staines mansion.
When they returned to Fort Hall, Lorna and Gilbert Baines announced plans to homestead on the Blackfoot River. Connal Lee’s family joined them for a house raising.
Governor Cumming invited Chief Arimo to meet the Peace Commissioners and witness the peaceful transfer of power. Once again, the Chief sent Connal Lee’s family as his delegates. After witnessing the Peace Commissioners meeting with the Mormon leaders, they decided to stay in the evacuated city and watch General Johnston take possession of the Territory of Utah.
The day long parade of five thousand men and all their cannons and commissary wagons marched through the empty city without incident. With peace restored, Connal Lee and his family joined Chief Arimo and traveled to his favorite summer camp in the Grand Teton Mountains.
