Description
Book Four: An Uneasy Peace continued Connal Lee Swinton’s adventures with his Shoshone family in the summer of 1858. Connal Lee and his diplomatic family saw The Utah War end without casualties as General Johnston took his vast army and all their camp followers through Great Salt Lake City. While Johnston began building Fort Floyd, Connal Lee and his family accompanied Chief Arimo’s clan to the Grand Tetons for the summer.
That fall they headed south to Fort Hall. They stopped at the Baines’ farmstead on the Blackfoot River. Lorna Baines helped Short Rainbow give birth to Connal Lee’s baby boy. After resting, they joined Chief Arimo at his Portneuf River camp. The Chief told Connal Lee he didn’t know if the usual fall fur trading expedition would be worthwhile with the stores closed during the summer. He asked Connal Lee’s family to visit the city and find out about trading.
While visiting Great Salt Lake City, Governor Cumming invited them to accompany him to the dedication ceremony of Fort Floyd. They enjoyed the pomp and ceremony, then headed back to tell Chief Arimo the stores had not reopened.
Captain Reed hosted a New Year’s Eve dance at Fort Hall and invited Connal Lee and his family to join him. The winter of 1858-1859 saw no snowfall. A severe drought settled over the land, extending south to the Mormon settlements as well. Connal Lee received a letter from his friends, Edward Harris and Perry Sessions, inviting him and his family to visit for a farewell party on May Day. The Governor and Major Harris were sending Edward and Perry off to West Point with a big dinner dance.
On their way south, a huge forest fire devoured the dry landscape and blocked the trail. They rode for their lives and barely escaped the roaring flames. On the first of May they attended the big farewell supper catered by the Globe in the Social Hall. Everyone they knew was there. The Governor and President Young surprised Connal Lee when they honored him during the festivities. They awarded him acreage and a cash purse to build a home in Great Salt Lake City in reward for saving the Governor and President Young’s lives during the Move South. The Governor made Connal Lee a citizen of the territory by formal Proclamation.
Connal Lee and his family saw off their friends, Edward and Perry, who departed in a huge wagon train from Emigration Canyon heading to the States.
